What is a DPF?

Generally speaking, particulate filter (DPF) is a kind of filter that can capture and store exhaust fumes to reduce carbon emissions from diesel or gasoline vehicles. The black carbon particles produced by incomplete combustion of engine fuel are generally about 1 micron. If they are not limited, just like old trucks that will emit black smoke when they step on the accelerator, which will aggravate particulate pollution in the air and be harmful to health. The particle trap can capture more than 30% to 95% of the harmful smoke and dust.

The particle trapper made of cordierite is a wall flow filter. Soot is collected by the particle trap and oxidized to CO2 under certain conditions. The process of oxidizing the collected soot in DPF is called regeneration.

Soot: hydrocarbon particles in the exhaust, including partially unburned fuel and oil generated during normal engine operation.

Ash: non combustible particles. (Ca, S, Zn and P CaSO4 Zn2P)

How to clean up particle blockage?

According to the manufacturer's settings, there are two ways to dredge the filter, which are called passive regeneration and active regeneration. The first kind of "passive regeneration" refers to that when the car is driving on the highway for a long distance and at high speed, the exhaust can automatically rise to a higher temperature and burn the excess smoke and dust in the filter cleanly. It is recommended that owners of DPF vehicles can drive at high speed for 30-50 minutes regularly on the highway to automatically remove the filter sediment particles.

The second is "active regeneration". As part of the vehicle ECU trip computer control, when the filter reaches the preset limit (usually 45% clogging), it will automatically inject additional fuel to improve the exhaust temperature and burn the stored carbon particles. However, if the travel is too short, the regeneration process may not be completed completely, and the filter is still partially blocked.

In this case, the regeneration cycle can be completed by driving at a speed of more than 60km/h for about 10 minutes. When the warning light is completely off, the regeneration is completed. In the active regeneration mode, usually the engine cooling fan will run automatically, with a slight increase in fuel consumption. At the same time, the ECU will increase the idle speed, and the exhaust pipe emits a burning pungent smell. However, when the warning light is on, it means that more than 45% of the traffic has been blocked. Therefore, we recommend running at high speed frequently and using low ash engine oil (ash value standard: 0.6-1.35). The lower the value, the less ash, to avoid problems.
